WHAT IS PHRF?

What is PHRF?

Performance Handicap Racing Fleet

PHRF is a locally administered handicapping system that uses the perceived speed potential of a yacht as the basis for the handicap. An initial handicap is assigned based on comparisons with similar yachts. The handicap may then be adjusted based on the performance of the class of the yacht.

In most fleets there is no credit for lack of sailing skill or boat preparation. The handicap is based on the yacht being sailed by a top notch crew with the best equipment. In short, the PHRF system handicaps yachts, not sailors.

Since the handicap is administered locally, you must contact the fleet that assigns the handicaps for your area to obtain a handicap. Click here to go to the Lake Michigan PHRF website to apply for your handicap rating along with more information.

HOW DOES PHRF ASSIGN A HANDICAP?

The Lake Michigan Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (LMPHRF) is a not-for-profit corporation serving individuals who competitively sail cruising/racing mono-hull and multihull boats primarily in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. LMPHRF also services sailors from other regions of the country and sailors from certain Canadian Yacht Clubs. LMPHRF is a handicap certificate issuing organization and does not sponsor, organize or manage competitive sailing events.

LMPHRF attempts to fairly handicap mono-hull and multihull racing/cruising sailboats for competition with minimal expense to the owner. LMPHRF may not provide a handicap if it is unable to obtain accurate information to assess the boat's speed potential or the boat does not meet minimum safety standards.

LMPHRF procedures are consistent with those of the United States Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (USPHRF) and abides by all applicable regulations and rules of the United States Sailing Association (US Sailing). The LMPHRF operating procedures guide performance handicap assignment, validation, certification and appeals of issued handicaps.

LMPHRF researches, develops, establishes and maintains an equitable system of performance handicaps for qualifying sailboats typically racing on Lake Michigan, nearby inland lakes and waterways, and elsewhere on the Great Lakes.
